lapvona by: ottessa moshfegh
like most edgy girls, i love moshfegh's books but lapvona might be one of her best. it was excruciatingly cruel, touchingly sensitive, erotic, and very human. i enjoyed the concept of raw power in a god-forgotten land, but i wish moshfegh had developed the era a bit more. i found it confusing trying to deduce when exactly this was set. at points it seemed the middle ages, other times end of renaissance, while maybe also the enlightenment. i was confused, and at times it did get in the way of the story. i ended up bingeing this book, and reading the whole thing in a day and a half because i couldn't put it down. it seemed to be a story of the human condition while infested with religious motifs, a classic "is he mortal or is he god?" i was delighted with the alignment to modern values and situations - and i'm quite sure moshfegh intentionally created these parallels for us to enjoy.
really good fiction read.
my favorite quote was this one, at the end of the book: "What are birds but angels?" (page 304.)
